I was looking to tap out my Subaru Impreza hatch and go for a two car setup where one is a eco-friendly commuter and the other is something that is fun and just for the occasional drive.
The potentially stupid part comes in my selection of the vehicles
eGolf (post 2017)
And a GTI (hopefully two door Mk7)
Now I have a garage to charge the eGolf and 125 miles is plenty for my daily activities. The GTI is then perfect for long road trips and fun back roads. The eGolf is a bargain for what they can be had used and two door GTIs are in a similar vein b ut it is stupid/crazy to have two Golfs?
Please advise.

You’re asking this group if it’s ok to buy more cars?

I mean, if your goal is one practical commuter and the other as the fun car, the e- golf makes sense for the first role but for the second you should consider something that is more of a fun car and less an all-arounder.

Well, we know what answer he's looking for at least.

You must lease two eGolfs.

On the three- door GTI, I think they only sold them in the US from 2015-2016, so they might be kind of rare-i sh.

Well, it needs to be my long distance car and my fun car so four real seats and cargo room is a must

I second MM54. Hell, grab the GTI as the commuter and go full crazy with a cheap fun car

eGolf for commuter is perfect. Having the practical hot hatch of the decade is less reasonable as a second car, but if that is what you enjoy driving most then go for it. Those two door GTIs are stupidly depreciated.
But consider the Miata! Or even something like a Porsche Boxter! You can have a rotating spot for the fun weekend car.

The only thing really rare about them since I’ve been looking is finding one not in black. I would prefer red or silver but I just won’t ever own a black car again.

You can crunch the numbers yourself, but my guess is that the additional depreciation on a 2nd car is more than the gas savings over 3 years.
But it sounds like fun so you should definitely do it.

i’m with MM. the egolf is a good diea. but vary your choice with the second one. A lexus GS or something would fit well

That’s kind of my idea for the second car. Get fun, pseudo GT cars at the bottom of their depreciation curve and rotate them every few years. I’ve just always wanted a GTI lol
![]() 08/04/2020 at 22:19 |

I’d go Miata for the fun car. But that’s just me. The Golf would be way better for road trips.

That could be a fun rotation but probably not something you want to keep for a long time of you already have a Golf. And it will just make you sad with how your eGolf behaves on the road.

True, I’d be getting both used and they’ve already lost so much value. I could get both cars for around $25k total which is around what my Impreza cost new lol. I want either an electric or plug-in hybrid because my commute is so stop and go at rush hour, I just want to not burn gas while I’m sitting in traffic but my commute is only around 30-35 miles round trip.

I thought about that but my commute is stop and go in traffic on the highway and not fun at all. The least I can do is not burn gas for my 30-35 miles roundtrip

I’d bet it would be cheaper overall to just get the GTI. Unless you put crazy miles on your daily.

That red is worth waiting for. There’s a red MK7 GSW I see regularly and every time I get a bit jealous cuz it looks sooo good
![]() 08/04/2020 at 22:26 |

The eGolf is just going to be sitting in traffic 95% of the time so it was never go ing to be fun lol. I just want a nice place to sit in traffic without burning gas

What about an e92 BMW? Or 1 series?
![]() 08/04/2020 at 22:26 |

My guess is that you don’t commute long enough for the numbers to work. But it might, because a lot of depreciation is already in.
Charging at work will help. If you do that, you might never charge at home.

Oh yeah! I’m all about no greyscale cars. a big part of why I like the eGolf because it comes in blue and green.

I’m currently putting on 25k miles a year on my daily. It will get better in a few years when I move closer to work/friends/gym and where my daughter lives with my ex-wife but until then, I’m averaging 80 miles a day
![]() 08/04/2020 at 22:32 |

Sadly, out of budget for the condition I would want. I’d love a red 230i but I’ll start with a GTI and probably rotate every few years

Geez, that is a bunch
![]() 08/04/2020 at 22:34 |

Nothing wrong with the eG olf, but I suspect from a purely economic perspective, you’d be better off just dailying the GTI. Won’t be as cheap as the eGolf would be, but it should be a lot cheaper than buying another car and the associated upkeep and depreciation.
![]() 08/04/2020 at 22:35 |

That’s just my commute. I’m on pace to hit 24-25k miles this year lol. I rarely do more than 9 0 miles a day.

I was actually thinking a 330e as an only car ? Unfortunately, the 14 mile EV range is kinda lame.

Maybe the way to think about it is the opposite of what I said. It might not save money. However, I doubt it will cost you much either. So do what will make you smile.

As a former Mk7 owner, the GTI shouldn’t be a second car. It’s an absolutely wonderful all rounder, but it’s not fun enough that I would specifically buy one not as a daily.

Any idea where to get such a cheap e-Golf? Any I’ve seen f or post 2017 are still $15+k.
![]() 08/04/2020 at 23:50 |

Sadly the GTI is the cheap one. Two doors are around $10k for the high mileage ones.

Maybe a used Prius C for commuting unless you want to electric.

Sounds like they both need reconsidered then so the practical/commuter actually fills your needs for it, instead of having two compromise cars
